On our road trip down to Dubrovnik, we stopped for 2 hours in Ljubljana and then spent the night in Zagreb. Ljubljana had a lovely old town area that definitely required more time to explore than the 2 hours we were given. I only was able to see the old city of Zagreb at night, but it had a very vibrant atmosphere and I would love to go back and visit for a longer time. Before we left for Dubrovnik in the morning, we attended a lecture at the law faculty at the University of Zagreb.

Loved seeing these pictures – I visited Croatia – Dubrovnik to Zagreb in 2006 and the towns and countryside all are beautiful!
I really like your pictures! 🙂
Beautiful pictures that beckon the viewer (especially this one, as I’m half Croatian)! I especially love the reverse view of Dubrovnik(?) looking out at the island.
Thank you, Juliann! The header photo at the top of the blog is a view of Dubrovnik from the city walls, if that is the one you refer to.
HI! I’m from Slovenia and I’m glad you liked Ljubljana its capital:) Nice blog!
Hi Monica,
I couldn’t resist reading your post, as I have been to Slovenia, and I really enjoyed reading it and looking at the pictures.
You should definitely revisit Ljubljana if you have the chance. I was there about five years ago ( I can’t believe it has been that long!) and ended up staying for a week. The town, and people , are lovely and welcoming. As are the bars and restaurants.
What I would recommend for visitors to Ljubljana is to spend a few days in the Triglav National Park and climb Mt. Triglav. You need to take proper walking equipment with you though , which you can hire from the local mountain shops. Although it is a tough walk it is worth it for the stunning views, lovely people you meet along the way and the experience of staying in Slovenia’s mountain huts. You also gain a sense of achievement once you reach the top and are back at the bottom again.
All the best
Lucy
Thank you so much for the tips on Slovenia! I can’t wait to go back!
Very beautiful. I love the architecture and the way it has been maintained. Makes me want to visit Croatia! Probably quite an area for tourism…
Great job baby! Freshly pressed! W00t!
Thank you everyone for your comments and congrats!
We visited Slovenia, including 2 days in Ljubljana, and it is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. Hope you have a chance to go back and spend more time. Nice trip report!
I don’t know if there is any country small like Slovenia with a sea, mountains, many rivers, lakes, caves, wineyards, etc all in one small country
Balkan really is beautiful.
Been in Dubrovnik a few years back myself and sooo beautiful!
Love Ljubljana and Zagreb has a very special place in my heart aswell =)
Hey Monica, have you been to Ptuj as well? I´m getting a little bit of homesick while watching your pictures here 🙂
Hi Stanko, sadly, I have not been to Ptuj. We were just passing through Slovenia so it was a brief visit, but I would love to go back and see more; it was really enchanting.
I have been to Ljubljana twice and I find it the cutest tow in Europe. All of Slovenia is very beautiful and diverse.
Looks like you had a wonderful trip, I love traveling myself. My favorite place was the Amazon jungle, very noisy at night though!
Lovely photos! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Beautiful photographs! And only two hours given to explore the old town area? I have to go there some day.
And congrats! We got Freshly Pressed! 🙂

All of those buildings are beautiful but that theater is one prettiest buildings I’ve seen in a while.
Nice photos 🙂
Can’t go there myself so I have to settle with the scenic shots.
Lovely place! Good photo shoot that show may key part of the area.
I love your pictures!! Two summers ago I passed on a train in the night through Ljubljana and didn’t get to see it, but my friends and I spent two days in Zagreb and I really fell in love with it. It has all sorts of unique qualities without having the overwhelming touristy feeling that major European cities have. Honestly, I liked the way Zagreb felt much better—more lived in, and somehow more real because of it.
I paid visit to some Slovenian friends. I spent two weeks in the small country that boarders Italy on the west, Austria to the north, and Croatia to the south. During much of the first week I maintained a most sun filled solace in the small coastal village of Piran , where a cultural influence from neighboring Italy is quite salient, and can be seen in the many old Italian churches that dot this Mediterranean styled village.
During my second week in Slovenia I ventured by train to the Croatian capital of Zagreb . As one exists the railway station in Zagreb there comes into view a large square surrounded by roads that are lined with aging and often massive Victorian buildings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian period. Further into the city these Victorian structures become juxtaposed with soviet era structures of a featureless concrete, all quite interesting to my eyes.
I truly love reading your blog, as it brings back memories of my own travel.
Thank you.
Nice pictures dear keep it up
and you missed bosnia 😛 🙂
I haven’t missed Bosnia! I am going to Sarajevo when I leave Dubrovnik.
ok ok 🙂 i’m a runner wannabe – this kind of accusations are somewhat expected from someone like myself

Hei Moni!
Glad you enjoyed Cro and Slo!! And Austria before…where are U from??
Such a lovely place to be!
It is a great pity, u missed taking a pix of the dragon bridge in Ljubljana. Also, the Ljubljanskigrad, castle on the hill. it’s walking distance from the city center. Do you see my picture? This was taken in Piran. Also in slovenja.

Hello Monica –
I am so excited to see your post about Slovenija and Croatia. I lived in Ljubljana in 1991 and 1992, and also spent much time in Zagreb doing business presentations for the students at the university there. As I hear you write how you wished you had more time to experience more of what these two great cities have to offer, I reflect back on a very special time in my life. The Croats and Slovenes are wonderful, fantastic people. The culture and life style is most impressive. It has and still is my goal to return back for the long term after my 2 boys are independent. I may even live out the rest of my days down the Croatian western coastline and I had one of my residences in the city of Rijeka on the bay. Amazing experience and happy to see you and your Baltic post being Freshly Pressed. Thank you. 🙂
I have also been to that bridge … made a video … here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA3MLO4HwP0
These photos are so cool. They look almost unreal. I should go there and see it all for myself. 🙂
